Boutwell the Duling Bear

Long long ago, in a small southern city not so far away lived a bear named Boutwell.

When Boutwell was only a small bear cub, Tim and Nathan Glenn found him outback behind Basil’s in Fondren scrounging for food. Touched by his love for fine cuisine, Tim and Nathan decided to adopt this small bear cub and make sure that he never went hungry.

The Glenns quickly learned that Boutwell was not just an ordinary bear. In addition to loving good southern cooking he also had a great love for music. It was not uncommon for the Glenns to find notes sitting around Basil’s and Roosters suggesting songs that should be played while patrons dined and dishes that should be served. While Boutwell truly loves all types of music, some of his favorite artists that were suggested regularly included Eddie Cotton, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Williams Brothers and of course - Elvis.

Tim Glenn knew that Boutwell, as all bears do, hibernated a great deal of the time. Tim and Nathan found themselves missing Boutwell’s suggestions for food and music when he was not around. On one occasion, Tim enquired as to where Boutwell hibernates. Boutwell responded that the location was a place he felt really "at home." Tim expressed how he wished Boutwell would come around more often, to that Boutwell responded that he could visit more frequently if the Glenns were not so far away. In fact, Boutwell said that the place he hibernated had long been his family's place of residency and his family was given the honor of watching after the location and the people who entered the doors.

After much coaxing, Boutwell agreed to show Tim and Nathan where he hibernated. The location was in Duling School. During Tim and Nathan’s tour of Duling School, Boutwell said that he had a great idea for a new restaurant – one unlike any that Mississippi nor the world had ever seen. Boutwell painted a picture of fine southern cuisine coupled with one of a kind entertainment on a nightly basis that all takes place inside the Duling School Auditorium.

Tim and Nathan both agreed to create this vision spawned by Boutwell, but under one condition. Boutwell would have to agree to permanently watch after the school, patrons and musicians who perform at The Auditorium. Boutwell happily made this deal with the Glenns and promised to always stay at Duling School. After all, the only reason he ever ventured away from Duling was to eat food prepared by The Glenns.

To honor Boutwell and his contribution to the Auditorium and Duling School, all concerts begin at 9:18 p.m., - Boutwell’s birthday September (09) the 18th.
